All You Need is Love is a Lie: Dean and Cas and the Issue of Trust
This post is inspired by, though not a direct response to, some of the points raised in this meta by sarasarai. Hence the reason for a new post rather than a re-blog. (But it’s a cool meta, with some cool patterns identified and you should read it!)
So I was thinking some more about the argument in 8x22 Clip Show, and the emotional parallels with issues raised between Dean and Cas at the end of S6. For all that it seems that fandom wants Cas verbally to return Dean’s feelings (with either an explicit “I love you” or “I need you too”), Misha’s comments out of JIBCON makes me think that that’s not on the menu.
And bizarrely? I am okay with that. Because for me, that’s not, in fact, the issue between Dean and Cas that’s keeping me anxious over the finale, and the future of their relationship in general. The issue for me? Is that whole trust thing Dean brought up. That whole trust thing that Dean brought up (finally) very pointedly.
And I think, maybe, I can see where they’re going with this. Dean doesn’t seem to doubt (not really) whether or not Cas cares for him/loves him. And I don’t either. Dean doubts, and is hurt by, the fact that Cas doesn’t trust Dean—and how much Dean, in fact, can trust Cas. Trust is the keyword here, guys, not need and not love.
